ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

No visit to Shetland is complete without getting up close and personal with our friendly Shetland ponies for a once in a lifetime opportunity in The Shetland Pony Experience! We are based at Papil in Burra, just a 25 minute scenic drive from Lerwick.
We have 3 separate interactive, hands on stations, where you get to handle the ponies while learning about them through asking questions.
Enter into the field with our adorable cheeky little foals (and their mums) to give them a scratch.
Inside our indoor station you can pet and brush the ponies before learning how to lead them through a simple obstacle course. Children can have a short supervised pony ride at this station.
Finally there are plenty of picture perfect photo opportunities while you lead the ponies through the idyllic, picturesque, rugged coastal fields to a secluded beach where we take your photos with the ponies on your camera.

Everyone present is participating in the Experience, we do not have facilities for spectators

We will meet and greet you to extend a warm welcome to The Shetland Pony Experience. We will take you through the three stations of the experience with the help of our friendly team.

OWNER & BREEDER
The ponies you will meet during your experience are mostly home bred here at the Merkisayre Stud. George is busy behind the scenes looking after the ponies day to day. He also built the indoor riding facility you will spend part of your experience in and he built the gig and coal cart (pictured).
